Penang Hokkien Podcast

I miss home soooooooooooooooo much!!! I was reading kstang's blog and decided to check out the site he recommended - Penang Hokkien Podcast. The moment I heard the Hokkien accent, I just wish so much that I am still that good at Hokkien. It reminds me of the words that are hardly used these days due to excessive English influence from the States. That's also because no one speaks Hokkien here. Some of the Penangites here doesn't seem to know Hokkien very well as part of their family are of the Cantonese origin. It's sad to know that not many people seem to know Hokkien very well anymore, especially the one from Penang.

The Podcast seem to remind me of all the 'si ku, go ku' that my ah kong used to tell us when we were kids. I wish I remember more of it but frequently, mum still likes to say 'U lui kai bo lor' whenever I get something which she thinks should not be spent on. Literally, it means 'got money spend no road' but the meaning behind it is that the money has been spent foolishly. There's also the often heard 'Bo tua bo sae' when we don't greet a visitor when they come to our house with 'aunty, uncle'. It brings the meaning 'impolite' or not showing respect to the elders, although it literally means 'no big, no small'.
